In the summer we eat ice cream
If it melts we don’t care…
In the sunshine everything tastes good
In the fall, the leaves let go and fall down
They are red and gold and brown
And we kick them walking along the street
Chased by fat, happy squirrels
When winter comes, I’ll have a new red coat
It was my sister’s, now it’s mine
Auntie put in a new lining
That’s stripped red and gold
And turned the cuffs back so everyone can see it
When spring comes, we go home to Trinidad
The trees and fruits are different there
Everything tastes wonderful when
My grandmother cooks it
That’s what my dad says
Then it’s summer all over again
The year goes round and round
Like the golden carousel
That stands at the faraway end of the park
The year is a round thing, like a ball, like a circle
Like a clock or a carousel
If you saw it once, you’ll see it again

I was charmed by this poem about a time when the rhythm of life was new. I suggest that we can all refresh ourselves from the well of memory from time to time.
