Champion: A Response

April 27th, 2011

I asked myself
am I a champion?
I wondered and said no
I am not.
I told myself
am I ready to be a champion?
By saving my dreams,
following my heart,
ready to welcome my responsibilities.
Ready to give my life
a time that I will never regret
but will be proud of
and when the final bell rings
I’ll be the true champion of my life.

This poem was written in response to my nephew Herman Baron III’s poem, “Champion.”

Masamba and his classmates at the Urban Assembly Academy of History and Citizenship for Young Men read and responded enthusiastically to Herman’s first book, Conversations with My Soul, last year. They read and responded under the leadership of their teacher, Ms. Glynis L. Cherry.

Masama understands Herman's poem very well. Mastering yourself is more difficult than going toe to toe with any enemy.
