The first thing I did today
—no it’s not true
first there was what I’d just as soon leave aside
& the mindless entertainment chatter
& the too cold for too long coffee
& the fumbling through yesterday’s news
—did you hear about the famous fashion designer
the historic presidential candidate?
all this will bore you, dear reader
encountering this poem on some tomorrow
that is (hopefully) as bright as this morning—
was to turn the music to that old favorite
we shared some years ago, beloved,
& think of how lucky I am to have this life with
you

The poet struggles with the mundane things of life, as we all do. But, as I've said previously, poetry isn't only for special occasions and special events. Poetry is as ordinary and necessary and as essential as bread and water and air.
