Fear

May 16th, 2014

I am what keeps you up at night.
I am what restrains you from thinking right
I am what drains your might.
I am the battle you don't want to fight.

To the strong I am nothing but an illusion.
The weak cannot conquer me, due to their confusion.
I mess with your mind; I stay in the back of your brain.
I am what makes you go insane.

When my presence is felt, I put you to shame.
I play a mental game.
I am the beast you cannot tame.
I am the ghost that haunts your name.

I interfere with your dreams, I make them seem impossible.
Everyone has gone through this obstacle.
Those pessimistic voices in your head, I am responsible.
You cannot harm me, I am unstoppable.

My interpretation of a situation is different, you won't see very clear.
When I strike, your state of mind is what I interfere.
I get stronger every time you shed a tear.
When you are vulnerable, I am always near.

I fill your head up with lies,
I am not sincere.
I am what makes children cry.
I am the negative whispers in your ear.
I am FEAR

Daniel Chavez is a student at Uniondale High School, studying under Mrs. Sheeba Varkey. This poem was submitted this year to a poetry contest at the Uniondale Public Library.

Fear speaks for itself. We just want to be sure that we don't let it speak for us. The rythmn of this poem is compelling and the poet fiercely adheres to his theme.

Come back for another day of poetry tomorrow. If you want to be part of 30 Days of Poetry, send your poems to 30daysofpoetry4@gmail.com until May 30th. I look forward to hearing from you!
