The African Wonder

May 1st, 2014

Her beauty is a wonder.
Her smile is intriguing.
With fiery black eyes,
And an elegance to her ebony skin,
She makes the stars look like they're not shining.
If beauty could be described in words,
There would still be no words to embody such beauty.
With every a smile she makes, my thoughts are jubilant.
How can such a beauty walk this earth?
With a personality like no other.
It's no wonder people love her.
I find myself magnetized to her essence.
My African Queen.
There is no other.
For the love she evokes is often unseen.

This poem is about the love a man has for his wife. She is beautiful and he admires her very essence. This poem is essentially about two African American lovers, but it is seen from the man's perspective, which shows just how much her beauty impacts him…

As we begin another adventure in poetry, this time in May, I am once again pleased to welcome back returning poets and new ones. Last year we celebrated 30 Days of Poetry 3. But the world has changed and so have many of our lives. What hasn’t changed is the need to occasionally to stop, drop and roll and remember that poetry feeds the soul.

This year, we are also celebrating the Young Master Writers Program. Several works submitted to that competition will also be published here. Dave Lacroix’s poem, “The African Wonder” will be the first. I am always happy to start the season with a love poem. Love has always been the business of poets and we like to embrace and celebrate that connection which is both ancient and new.

Come back for another day of poetry tomorrow. If you want to be part of 30 Days of Poetry, send your poems to 30daysofpoetry4@gmail.com until May 30th. I look forward to hearing from you!
